Guns. An Interesting Read.

I just want to put this up so that I have access to it, but feel free to read it, too. This Harvard study says guns and murder aren't related. Guns and suicide aren't related. More guns = less crime, as Lott has said.

The final words in the article are these:

Over a decade ago, Professor Brandon Centerwall of the University of Washington undertook an extensive, statistically sophisticated study comparing areas in the United States and Canada to determine whether Canada’s more restrictive policies had better contained criminal violence. When he published his results it was with the admonition:

If you are surprised by [our] finding[s], so [are we]. [We] did
not begin this research with any intent to “exonerate” hand‐
guns, but there it is—a negative finding, to be sure, but a nega‐
tive finding is nevertheless a positive contribution. It directs us
where not to aim public health resources.

Masks and Lips (and lions and tigers and bears, oh my!)

This is my Tor Johnson mask. People always play with its lips, every time I wear it. Every time.

So, with that little bit of personal experience, let me be blunt: you have to have an everything-is-racial paradigm to see what happened at the MO County Fair as racist. The bubbadubba on the mask's lips was meant to show that it was a dummy because he/it didn't react and not a person, so that when he finally does run away from the bull, it's SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY, much like when people try to get Beefeaters or Tower Guards to flinch. There was even a commercial about it back in the day which I can't find on the interwebby.

The Summer Of The Tick That Tried To Kill My Brother

Well, as I indicated in another post, it was a Lone Star tick the gave my brother ehrlichiosis and he nearly died, so here are two great resources about ticks:

The University of Rhode Island TickEncounter  site is fantastic. Lots of pages, a great Top Ten Things you need to know and more.

Stop Ticks On People has plenty, too, especially the one page on Prevention, it's just not as pretty.

Photos and Stuff

Thanks to a link in some Men's Health-daily-whatever email I get, I started poking around on these photographer's pages:

Robert-Paul Jansen's site, or just check out his blog for some gorgeous photography.

You should have already heard of Kevin Russ, he's become a 'thing' as he has been living off his pics and travelling the West taking pictures. Here's a short little article, and here's another with some links.

I wish I had their eye, and I wish I had that life sometimes! Nevertheless, here's the places where they sell their photos to make some cash from their passion of taking pictures:

most have contributed to, but don't seem to prefer iStockphoto As Jansen put it on instagram, "it didn't feel right."

That being said, I want some stuff. an OlloClip a GorillaPod and a Glif Plus set.

I took this!

Is It Possible There Are More Things To Wish For? VW Things, Of Course.

Of course there are!

and right here in Cincinnati. Dang. I have no money, and certainly need a roof, central air fixed, exterior paint, etc..... before I need a toy car. AAARRRGGGHHHHHHH

$3900 is a steal. Seriously. It's gone. I hope it doesn't get dropped, hacked, chopped, etc.....

also a great deal at $3600:

Here's a travesty. Seriously, when I see the word "custom" I get nervous...

and the guy wants an absurd amount of money.

This has been on thesamba.com for a long time.

I'd buy that.  Someone finally did! Good on ya, mate.
